Summer Clothes

Here is a picture of my closet after all the summer’s dirty clothes have been piled in it, so I can walk to and from my bed relatively unencumbered:

Who among you, faced with this kind of squalor, this daunting mountain of drudgery, would not prefer to escape forthwith and tout suite into the perfect ideal world of music, into its dancing spheres and lines?

Ah, but the wheels turn and even before my first cup of coffee it occurs to me. Perhaps I create a situation in my apartment, deliberately but subconsciously, so that I will be all the more tempted, nay even forced, to get myself to the piano right away! Perhaps it is not really laziness and slobbery but the most fiendishly clever practice motivation technique ever invented! Anybody with me? Anybody buying it?

Oh my. If this technique works for you, however, let the pile of laundry continue to tower ever higher…

The practical thing to do would be to deal with the laundry, but I too would practice instead. Then again I have a non-musician husband I usually ask to do such things. How is it that people with 40 hour work weeks still seem to have more time than people trying to regularly practice an instrument?

You’ll feel so much better with clean and pressed laundry. Take some time away from music and live mundane life second to second, feeling it intensly like Proust describes it. Or have someone do it for you (I hear New York is good for this kind of thing)and live life by reading Proust, who will tell you what you should have felt doing laundry or othere such lowly everyday chores.

Brilliant! And when you finally run out of clothes to wear, you won’t even be able to leave your apartment, so you’ll have no choice but to stay in and keep practicing!

Haha when my teacher Victoria Bogdashevskaya was little she used to want to do anything but practice, the laundry, clean the house, anything haha. I am quite the opposite XD. Have you ever listened how…Barenboim plays Beethoven fourth concerto…it’s kinda sad… he messed up on part of the notes… and… in some places, his intonation was kinda bad too. Well not bad… just, not grammatic

Hey JD, what about my application to you before? as your personal assitant? I’m still available, can pile neat laundry, fresh brewed coffee every morning and well pressed pants hanging on your closet. Just don’t forget to pay me the health insurance and I will gladly quit my day job.
I can also be your piano partner in practice.

    Dear Jeremy:

I am inviting you to lunch sometime during the time of your visit to Portland for your November 16 performance.

Would you have time for that?
